Boomtown Days canceled this year

JOPLIN, Mo. — A Boomtown Days festival will not be held this year so that efforts can be concentrated on observing the one-year anniversary of the Joplin tornado on May 22.

“With the one-year anniversary event of the May 22nd tornado planned just two weeks prior to the annual festival dates, the committee feels it in the best interest of the community to allow volunteers, planners and attendees to focus on the activities surrounding the activities surrounding the one-year memorial date,” said festival spokesman Cameo Gerdes in a news release announcing the decision.

There are plans underway to hold a festival next year on June 13-15, she said.
