JOPLIN, Mo. —
Those rebuilding or repairing homes and businesses in Joplin may learn more about energy-efficiency options and green-building technology on Monday at the Greenbuilders Expo presented by Freeman Health System.
It will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the conference room of Freeman Business Center, 3220 McClelland Boulevard. Forty-five vendors will be on hand for the free public event.
Shawn McGrew, Freeman’s service excellence coordinator, said the event originally was planned for the fall, but the date was moved up because of the increased interest by those rebuilding from the tornado.
Though the damage from the May 22 tornado was immense, McGrew said rebuilding may give some opportunities to rebuild with an eye toward energy efficiency. He said green building sometimes costs more initially, but the investment provides returns in energy savings.
“You always have to look at return on investment,” McGrew said. He said many of the items offered by vendors at Monday’s event will provide long-term savings.
He said vendors include window and siding companies, a company that specializes in providing geothermal heat and air-conditioning systems, a company that offers energy consultations, and a contractor that specializes in building with insulated concrete forms.
Information about wind and solar power also will be available.
McGrew said vendors also will be available to answer questions from residents about rebuilding and repair projects.
“There are still so many questions out there about the rebuilding process,” McGrew said.
Freeman Health System is a member of the Regional Sustainability Alliance, which works to promote environmental awareness.
