Susan Redden: Campaign contributions already adding up

JOPLIN, Mo. — Money is starting to pile up for candidates planning to run for House of Representatives from Missouri in 2012.

According to information filed last week with the Federal Election Commission, U.S. Rep. Billy Long, of Springfield, has collected nearly $270,000 in campaign contributions for a three-month period ending June 30. U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler, of Harrisonville, has taken in more than $347,000.

The reports listed campaign receipts, spending and cash on hand for Long, incumbent in Missouri’s Seventh District, and Hartzler, in the Fourth District. Both are Republicans who won their seats in 2010; Long took an open seat vacated by Roy Blunt, and Hartzler defeated Ike Skelton, long-time Democrat incumbent.

Financial information on the two, and other candidates, is available on the Federal Elections Commission website.

Incumbency has its advantages, even with freshmen. Long reported nearly $165,000 in individual contributions and more than $95,000 in committee contributions for the three months ended June 30, while Hartzler reported more than $162,000 in individual contributions and more than $158,000 from committees.

Individual contributors to Long from the region included $500 from Karl Glassman, of Leggett & Platt, Carthage; $2,400 from Andrew Hunte, of the Hunte companies, in Goodman; and $750 from physician Hish Majzoub, of Joplin. The campaign also reported contributions totaling $1,250 from three Washington-area lobbyists.

PAC contributions were listed from organizations including National Rural Electric Cooperatives, Ameren, American Airlines, the American Bankers Association, American Bus Association, American Hospital Association, Anheuser-Busch Companies, builders and contractors, coal mining, Continental Airlines Employees, Dairy Farmers of America, Delta Airlines, Federal Express, Honeywell International, Kraft Foods, National Mining Association, National Telecommunications Cooperative, National Air Traffic Controllers, National Association of Broadcasters, National Association of Realtors, National Rifle Association, National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, National Tooling and Machining Association, Price Waterhouse Coopers, R.J.. Reynolds, Raytheon, Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, Boeing Company and United Technologies.

Individual contributions to Hartzler from the region came from Susan Barrett, Red Rock Angus, Nevada, $1,250; Scott Buerge, banker, Nevada, $2,500; Rudy Farber, banker, Neosho, $2,500; Harold and Robin Fugate, Fugate Motors, Eldorado Springs, $2,500; Debra Stefan, farmer, Golden City, $1,250; and Debbie-Jo White, Kanakuk Ministries, Branson, $1,000.

Hartzler, who serves on the House Agriculture and Armed Services committees, reported political action committee contributions on behalf of groups including sugar cane and beet sugar growers, livestock marketers, cotton growers, beef, chicken and turkey associations, and veterinarians, along with the American Bankers Association, Builders and Contractors, AT&T, BNSF Railway, National Automotive Dealers Association, Eagle Forum, Express Scripts Inc., Exxon Mobil, General Electric Co., Honeywell International, Independent Insurance Agents, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Monsanto Company, National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, National Association of Realtors Political Action Committee, National Federation of Independent Business, OSI Restaurant Partners, Rolls-Royce North America, Boeing Company, Home Depot and the Trucking Political Action Committee.
