OKLAHOMA CITY —
Several Oklahoma school districts have removed or are considering removing a piece of playground equipment linked to the death of a 9-year-old girl.
Fourth-grader Alyssa Avila of Wyandotte died Thursday after falling off the device called an X-Wave — then hitting her head when she tried to get back on it. A cause of death has not been determined.
School officials in Moore, Edmond, Oklahoma City, Putnam City, Deer Creek and Norman have either removed the devices or prohibited children from playing on them. Exactly how many X-Waves are on playgrounds in Oklahoma is unknown since there is no central collection point for such information.
Quality control manager Matt Stewart for X-Wave manufacturer Xccent Inc., would not discuss how many units have been sold to Oklahoma schools.
