JOPLIN, Mo. —
The second annual Overflow: Voices in Action choir competition will be staged at 7 p.m. Friday at College Heights Christian Church, 4311 E. Newman Road in Joplin.
“It’s an incredibly high level of talent,” said Mark Quinn, one of the producers. “You’ve got some of the area’s best choirs competing for the top prize and recognition as the top Overflow choir.”
The show will feature six local choirs: the College Heights Celebration Singers, Highest Praise from Forest Park Baptist Church, the worship choir from Christ’s Church of Oronogo, Joplin High School’s Touch of Class, the Carl Junction High School Dynamics and the Carthage High School show choir. Recording artist Cody James is also scheduled to perform.
“This is not a performance that you’re going to see in a church,” Quinn said. “These are choir performances where they really push themselves and really bring a different kind of music to the stage than what they’re even used to or comfortable doing.”
All proceeds of ticket sales and audience donations will benefit Watered Gardens, which works locally to help people in poverty. The organization provides substance-abuse recovery support and goal-setting and accountability classes. It also operates a men’s shelter and is currently building a women’s shelter.
“Fundraising generates a significant part of our donations and is a planned part of our annual budget,” James Whitford, co-founder and director of Watered Gardens, said in a statement. “The partnerships made during Overflow will be vital for us to continue our mission to resolve poverty in people’s lives.”
Last year’s Overflow concert funded nearly an entire year of operation costs for Watered Gardens, according to a news release from event organizers.
Tickets are $10 and are available on OverflowJoplin.com and at The Wild Flower, 1832 E. 32nd St. in Joplin; Upstairs Boutique, 502 S. Main St. in Joplin; and Take Nature’s Path, 501 S. Madison Ave. in Webb City. Seating is limited.
