Genealogy research center closed

JOPLIN, Mo. — The Joplin Genealogy Society has closed its research center at 306 S. Wall St. and will move of the materials there to the Jasper County Records Center in Carthage.

Shirley Kennedy, society president, said the group can no longer afford to pay rent and utilities on the building it has occupied for the last six years. People who have donated books and materials to the organization may retrieve them, if they wish, between 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

She said arrangements also are being made to offer some of the group’s materials to other area genealogy and historical societies. Surplus shelving, office furniture and other items will be sold on Saturday, Nov. 17.
