Ron Richard elected majority floor leader in Missouri Senate

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri Sen. Ron Richard, R-Joplin, has been elected majority floor leader in the Missouri Senate.

The vote came in a meeting of the Senate Republican Caucus Thursday.

Richard, who will start his third year in the Senate in January, succeeds state Sen. Tom Dempsey in the post. Dempsey, of St. Peters, advanced in leadership to the position of Senate president pro tem. The lieutenant governor serves as Senate president.

Richard said his job will be managing how legislation advances after it moves out of Senate committee and onto the Senate calendar. Before being elected to the Senate, Richard served in the Missouri House of Representatives, including a term as Speaker of the House. He previously was a Joplin City Council member, and mayor.
