The construction work to renovate North Middle School is proceeding, despite winter weather conditions, according to a report that will be presented tonight to the Joplin Board of Education.
“The only challenge there is the extreme cold,” said C.J. Huff, superintendent of the Joplin School District. “So there’s certain processes that we can’t do in those conditions.” He cited painting and installing floor tiles as examples.
The board also is to take up advance consideration of the proposed calendar for the 2011-2012 school year during its meeting.
The first day of the term is proposed for Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, with the last day of school being May 18, 2012.
The meeting outline calls for board members to approve a series of purchases via consent agenda, and to OK a bid of $19,413 from Gerken Environmental for asbestos removal at Memorial Education Center, formerly Memorial Middle School.
The agenda also includes:
n Consideration of 24 teacher retirements at the end of the current school year.
n Evaluation of the Franklin Technology Center program.
n A first reading of 13 proposed policy revisions to the district’s manual.
