A 19-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle accident at 8 p.m. Monday on Interstate 44, a half-mile east of Mount Vernon in Lawrence County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Sean W. Saaf, of Mount Vernon, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lawrence County coroner, the state patrol said.

Saaf was driving a westbound pickup truck that struck a median cable and overturned, the patrol said. He was thrown from the vehicle.

n Two Halltown residents were injured in a two-vehicle accident at 8:08 a.m. Tuesday on Route O, a mile south of Halltown in Lawrence County, the patrol said.

One of the drivers, April D. Spaulding, 21, and an occupant of the second vehicle, William J. Welch, 56, were taken to St. John’s Regional Health Center in Springfield, the patrol said.

Spaulding was driving a southbound car that ran into the rear of a trash truck that was stopped on the highway, the patrol said. Welch was an occupant of the truck driven by Roger D. Barton, 50, of Ash Grove, the patrol said.

n Five people from Kansas were injured in a two-vehicle accident at 8:05 a.m. Monday on Missouri Highway 66, three miles west of Joplin, the patrol said.

The driver of one of the vehicles, Elva E. Copeland, 64, and two of his passengers, Ethel L. Copeland, 84, and Mildred Skye, 89, all of Galena, were taken by ambulance to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, the patrol said. The driver of the other vehicle, Chevy L. Groves, 19, of Treece, was taken to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, and his passenger, Sandy Skye, age not available, of Galena, was taken to St. John’s in Joplin, the patrol said.

Groves’ southbound vehicle pulled into the path of Copeland’s eastbound vehicle and was struck broadside, the patrol said.

n A Rich Hill resident was injured in a two-vehicle accident at 7:45 a.m. Monday on U.S. Highway 71, eight miles north of Nevada in Vernon County, the patrol said.

Amanda D. Vangordon, 23, was taken to Butler Hospital, the patrol said.

Vangordon lost control of her southbound vehicle on an ice-covered bridge, the patrol said. Her vehicle struck a southbound truck driven by Weldon G. Halladay, 43, of Louisburg, Kan., and both vehicles ran off the road, the patrol said.

n A Webb City man was injured in a two-vehicle accident at 1:15 p.m. Monday on Maiden Lane at Junge Boulevard, according to a Joplin police report.

David J. Clark, 53, was taken by ambulance to an unspecified hospital, police said.

Clark was driving a southbound pickup truck that was struck in the rear by a vehicle driven by Shonda C. Thomas, 23, of Joplin, as Clark stopped for a red light at the intersection, the report said.
