TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas House member has proposed a bill that would allow people to waive the state’s marriage license fee if they can’t afford it.

Rep. Joe Patton, a Topeka Republican, says he proposed the bill to encourage marriage in the state. He says eliminating a financial burden to marriage would make the state stronger by strengthening marriages.

Patton contends many people in the state don’t marry because of the $69 marriage fee.

Under his legislation, the marriage fee would be waived if the couple filed a poverty affidavit.
