CARTHAGE, Mo. —
The Sycamore Street bridge over railroad tracks west of downtown Carthage was closed on Tuesday after serious deterioration was discovered in an inspection by the Missouri Department of Highways and Transportation.
The closing is permanent and motorists will be rerouted to nearby Oak Street and Walnut Street bridges.
Weight restrictions had been added to the bridge each year after annual inspections and the condition of the bridge has reached the point it can no longer be used, officials said. Barriers will be installed and the bridge will be closed even to pedestrian traffic.
The closing was announced Tuesday during a meeting of the Carthage City Council.
