Governor Nixon tours temporary autism center

JOPLIN, Mo. — Gov. Jay Nixon on Wednesday praised the work of Ozark Center for Autism in the wake of the May 22 tornado and a new state law that is enabling more children to get services of the center.

Nixon toured the center, which is located in temporary quarters at the Bridge after the center building was destroyed in the tornado. Services will move to a larger site by Nov. 1 until a new, state-of-the art center is finished, according to Paula Baker, chief clinic officer for Freeman Health System and supervisor of programming for the autism center.

Nixon said center staff “had overcome extreme challenges to continue  to deliver care for clients,” including numbers that have expanded since a law passed last year that requires insurance companies to provide coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders. As a result of the law, 26 youngsters with autism are receiving services at the center.
