Carthage police say man found in river victim of homicide

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Carthage police believe a man whose body was found early Wednesday in Spring River was the victim of a homicide, according to police Chief Greg Dagnan.

He said an autopsy will be conducted today, and the Tri-State Major Case Squad has been called to help work the case.

Though he would not offer details about how the man died, Dagnan said, “It’s pretty apparent that it was a homicide.”

He said the victim was a 43-year-old man, but he would not identify him further until relatives were located and notified.

The body was found about 9 a.m. in Spring River near a homeless camp in north Carthage, “approximately a half a mile north of the most northern street in the city,” the chief said.

Dagnan said he was not sure who discovered the body. Police believe the man was homeless and living at the riverside camp, but they have not confirmed that, he said.

“We’re still doing interviews of everyone,” he said.

Dagnan said he expects the autopsy will give police more information on the cause of death, when the man died and how long the body had been in the river.

THE TRI-STATE MAJOR CASE SQUAD, composed of members of law enforcement agencies from Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma, normally is called together to assist in homicide investigations.
