An 82-year-old man is believed to have drowned while fishing Sunday at a stone quarry in western Barton County.
Sheriff Mitchell Shaw said the Barton County Sheriff’s Department received a report at 7 p.m. Sunday that Lyle R. Moss, of Lamar, had not returned home from a fishing outing to the quarry. When deputies arrived, family members were already at the pit looking for Moss, the sheriff said.
A search was conducted and the man’s body was located in the water, Shaw said. Barton County Coroner Tucker Joustra pronounced the man dead at the scene. The sheriff said Moss’ boat had drifted and was located some distance from the body.
Moss had gone fishing alone, Shaw said. The sheriff said the death was being treated as an accidental drowning, although investigators could not be certain that Moss had not suffered some sort of medical emergency that may have contributed to the drowning.
The Missouri State Water Patrol assisted in the investigation.
