Better get outside today.

The National Weather Service in Springfield is reporting that southerly winds will push temperatures in the region above freezing for the first time this year. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the region’s temperature will still be below normal. Another batch of cold air is expected tonight, with possibly some flurries, and that will help keep temperatures below normal through the middle of the week.

It won’t come as a surprise to those who were out in it everyday, but December was one of the coolest on record for Joplin. The mean temperature in Joplin was 32.4 degrees, which is 4.3 degrees below normal.

For 2009, Joplin’s average temperature was 56.7 degrees, compared to a normal year, which is 57.5 degrees.
