England to see president at JHS graduation

JOPLIN, Mo. — Russell England, a 90-year-old World War II veteran who lived through the Jim Crow days and the civil rights movement, has been offered tickets to see President Barack Obama speak at the Joplin High School commencement later this month.

“It’s going to be the greatest day of my life. I can’t wait,” England said. “It’s the best thing that could happen to me.”

England was contacted by Gov. Jay Nixon’s office on Thursday about tickets to attend the graduation. Joplin Superintendent C.J. Huff saw the Globe article about England on Thursday morning and visited with the governor’s office by phone about getting England tickets.
