PITTSBURG, Kan. —
For more than a quarter of a century, the Mount Carmel Foundation has displayed Remember Me Trees at Meadowbrook Mall with ornaments to remember and honor loved ones of the community. Every ornament represents many special times with families and friends, and every ornament tells a special story.
Today at 6 p.m., the names of those honored or remembered will be read during a public ceremony. The Pittsburg Community Youth Chorale, comprised of students in grades 4 through 6, will perform several musical selections under the direction of music teachers Virginia Darling, Jeanne Hoover and Jessica Baker.
The Remember Me Trees are located in the center of the mall through the holidays and all are welcome to contribute an ornament ranging from $5 bows to $50 angels. The Mount Carmel Foundation supports healthcare in Southeast Kansas with these contributions. Funds from the Remember Me Trees have been used for several health care needs within Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg including the Cancer Center, the cardiac step-down unit, hospice and home health, and other departmental resources.
“Many treasured memories are held within each ornament on our Remember Me Trees,” Mount Carmel Foundation Executive Director Duane Dreiling said in a statement. “We are honored to represent loved ones of community members with this long-standing tradition.”
Members of the community may still make a donation for an ornament by completing a form near the trees in Meadowbrook Mall and mailing to the Mount Carmel Foundation office. Contributions also be made by visiting the Mount Carmel Foundation offices located on the first floor of the Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg. Contributions include bows ($5), doves ($10), military hearts or stars ($15), hearts ($25) or angels ($50).
