Several candidates filed to run for school board or city council posts in the area on Tuesday, which was the first day that candidates could put their names on the ballot for the April 2 vote in Missouri.
Both incumbents on the Joplin Board of Education filed for re-election to their seats Tuesday, according to the board’s secretary.
Michael D. Landis has served on the board since April 2001. Dawn Sticklen was appointed to her position in June to fill a spot left vacant by the departure of Ashley Micklethwaite, a former president of the board.
Both seats carry a three-year term.
Three incumbents on the Carthage City Council filed for re-election on Tuesday. Five council posts — all two-year terms — will be up for election in April.
Those filing Tuesday were Jim Swatsenbarg , current 1st Ward councilman; Steve Leibbrand, 3rd Ward; and Ed Hardesty, in the 5th Ward.
Posts currently held by Larry Chapin , in the 2nd Ward, and Dan Rife, in the 4th Ward, also will be decided.
Filing on Tuesday for re-election to the Carthage Board of Education was incumbent Justin Baucom. Three-year board posts to expire with the April election are those currently held by Baucom and Mark Westhoff.
In Neosho, voters will decide three-year posts on the Neosho City Council currently held by Councilmen Tom Workman and Steve Hart.
Several potential candidates have picked up nominating packets, and one was returned on Tuesday by incumbent Hart, according to the Neosho city clerk’s office.
To gain a place on the ballot, candidates must submit nominating petitions signed by 38 registered voters. Signatures filed by Hart are being checked by the Newton County clerk’s office.
One candidate — Jonathan Russell — filed Tuesday to run for the Neosho School Board.
The three-year board posts currently are held by Chris Parks and Mike Stauffer.

In Missouri, filing for city council and school board posts will close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

Police believe Doyle Handle shot himself after fatally shooting Dena Davenport during a domestic disturbance Thursday night at their residence in Grove. Officers responded to a 6:55 p.m. report of a shooting at the couple’s home on Wood Street on the southwest side of Grove and found Handle, 52, in the front yard with a gunshot wound to his jaw.

Joplin area lawmakers cited accomplishments and disappointments in the just-concluded Missouri legislative session during a brunch Friday sponsored by the Neosho Chamber of Commerce.
