JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri could get up to $400 million in federal aid for Medicaid and schools.

The money is part of a $26 billion extension of stimulus programs passed Thursday by the U.S. Senate. The measure also needs House approval.

State budget director Linda Luebbering (LOO’-ber-ing) says Missouri’s Medicaid money could range from $150 million to $210 million, depending on the state’s unemployment rate. States with higher unemployment qualify for more money.

She says Missouri could get $189 million for K-12 schools.

The federal aid is meant to fill state budget gaps and avoid cuts at schools.

Missouri officials want to save much of it for use in the 2012 budget, when Nixon’s administration is projecting a $600 million shortfall.
