Nonprofits, other organizations, building housing for tornado victims

JOPLIN, Mo. — More than 100 houses will be built in Joplin and Duquesne over the next few years by charities, nonprofits and other organizations to return residents displaced by the May 22 tornado.

Joplin Habitat for Humanity has completed 10 houses, has started work on five more and will start another 10 within the next few months.

The most recent announcement was Convoy of Hope, which will build at least 18 energy-efficient houses. Construction will start later this month and finish in May.

Others building homes include Catholic Charities of Southwest Missouri, Samaritan’s Purse and Homes of Hope.

There’s also the $2.5 million the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri is making available through grants to nonprofits to build homes for tornado victims.
