PITTSBURG, Kan. —
State Rep. Terry Calloway, R-Pittsburg, announced he has withdrawn his name from the 2012 election.
“It has been my honor and privilege to serve the 3rd Statehouse District of Kansas,” Calloway said in a statement. “Since arriving in Topeka, my priority has been to focus on growing the Kansas economy and to create more private sector jobs. With the support of hundreds of Southeast Kansans, together we were able to accomplish this.”
Calloway, who served one term, said he cannot maintain the level of time it takes to serve in the legislature and also work at his professional job as a computer systems engineer covering seven states in the Midwest.
“I have worked hours on end trying to fulfill the needs of the two positions, however in the end one is going to suffer, and in this case the professional job was suffering most and I could not keep going at this pace.”
A former Calloway campaign worker, Michelle Hucke, will be filing for the seat.
“She has the experience and energy to carry forward the progress that has been made. I give her my complete and total endorsement.”
Former state Rep. Julie Menghini, a Pittsburg Democrat who held the seat for three terms, also is running.
