CARTHAGE, Mo. —
The Lost Photos of Joplin Project has scheduled claim days for Saturday, May 12, Saturday, May 19, and Tuesday, May 22.
The first two events will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. near the food court in Joplin’s Northpark Mall, 101 North Range Line Road. A third claim day will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 22 — the anniversary of the tornado — at Joplin Public Library, 300 S. Main St.
For nearly a year, the volunteer group, which is based at the First Baptist Church in Carthage, has worked to clean, archive and return to their owners some of the photos that were displaced by the 2011 tornado but later found by others. The group has collected more than 35,000 photos to date, and scheduled several claim days, each time finding owners for up to a few hundred photos.
“We have given back right at 8,500 so far,” said Donna Turner, who serves as the onsite coordinator of the effort.
It’s important, Turner said, for anyone planning to claim photos at an upcoming event to first locate the photos in their online database at joplinrescuedphotos.org, then submit a claim form with identification numbers so that volunteers can locate the photos in the archive and pull them.
Those who are unable to do so or lack Internet access may look through copies of each and every photo in binders made by the group.
Tornado victims who have questions about missing photos may contact Donna Turner at the Lost Photos of Joplin Project at 417-358-7266 or at 417-793-3921.
