Scouts, other groups participate in Flag Day event

JOPLIN, Mo. — Young people prepared care packages for troops stationed overseas during a Flag Day event today at the Joplin National Guard Armory.

Included were members of Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, the Joplin Boys and Girls Club and National Guard Youth.

Girl Scout Cadet Taylor Lewis, 11, of Carl Junction, was drawing a picture of a soldier and an American flag to go in a care package.

“I feel good that they get things from people in America that care about them,” she said about the project.

Participants also learned flag etiquette and how to properly retire a U.S. flag, by burning it as part of a ceremony.
