Authorities on Sunday morning recovered the body of Christopher Robertson, 28, of Tillman, S.C., from Spring River at Riverton, said Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.

Groves said Deputy Shane Gibson encountered Robertson around 11 p.m. Saturday on the south side of the Spring River Bridge at Riverton. A report had been made that Robertson had been walking in the middle of the highway and was causing a hazard.

Groves said as the deputy questioned Robertson the man started to run. Gibson fired a stun gun at Robertson, but Groves said the probes didn’t penetrate his skin, so they weren’t effective. Robertson continued running and jumped off the bridge into the river.

Groves said Galena, Baxter and Columbus fire departments, the Newton County, Mo., dive team and the Four State Search and Rescue Team assisted in the search and recovery. The body was found near where he jumped in, Groves said. The body has been transported to Topeka for an autopsy.
