Filing opens Tuesday for city, school posts

JOPLIN, Mo. — When it comes to elections, all the focus in recent months has been on the presidential race decided in November. But local voters can choose who will set local tax rates and lead communities and schools in city council and school board elections set for next April 2.

Filing for the offices opens Tuesday, Dec. 11 and closes Jan. 15. School board posts will be up for election in local districts, and city council races will be decided in communities except for Joplin, which holds council elections only in even-numbered years.

Elections also are set for April 2 for cities and school leadership posts in Kansas.

The filing deadline in Kansas is Jan. 22, but the state does not set a starting date for filing for most offices decided in that election, according to the Kansas Secretary of State.
