JOPLIN, Mo. —
Cancellations and delays were announced Wednesday as a result of the winter storm warning issued for Thursday.
The forecast calls for sleet and ice along with high winds in the area.
Freeman Health System postponed the dedication ceremony for its Beacon of Hope Tornado Memorial, which was to be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Freeman said the Freeman Hospital East dialysis center will open at 9 a.m. Thursday.
A “Coffee with Carver” event slated for 10 a.m. Thursday at George Washington Carver National Monument has been postponed. A new date has not been set.
The Joplin Sports Authority is pushing back its weekend NAIA baseball games in Joplin and Pittsburg, Kan.
The schedule called for teams to begin play on Friday. Their arrival has been postponed until Friday evening for play on Saturday and Sunday, if weather permits, or Sunday and Monday. The teams are to play at Wendell Redden Stadium at the Joplin Athletic Complex and at Jaycee Ballpark in Pittsburg.
KanCare meetings in Kansas for Medicaid recipients have been canceled. A 1 p.m. meeting at Fort Scott was held Wednesday, but a 6 p.m. meeting was canceled as were sessions planned for Thursday across the state.
An open house on Friday at Pittsburg State University’s College of Technology has been called off. The open house, held once each semester, is designed to give high school students from across the region an up-close look at the programs and services of the College of Technology. Officials will announce the new open house date when it is set.

Schifferdecker water park opening delayed week or two
Wet spring weather has delayed work on the Schifferdecker Aquatic Center, and it will not open over Memorial Day weekend, city officials said Friday. No date was given for the expected opening, but it could be delayed one to two weeks, according to Chris Cotten, Joplin parks and recreation director.

Foundation announces $10 million milestone
The Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas announced Friday that it has reached the once seemingly impossible amount of $10 million in cash assets. The foundation, which was created for charitable giving in 2001 with matching funds from Kansas Health Foundation, had $545,000 in assets by the end of its first year.
