Route 66 photos sought; exhibit to be part of festival in Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. — The Joplin Convention and Visitors Bureau wants to put Route 66 photographs on the map.

As part of the Route 66 International Festival in August, the tourism bureau is asking photographers to contribute photos of historic Route 66 for a display and permanent exhibit.

The intention is to display them during the festival to be staged Aug. 1-3 in the Joplin area. After that, the exhibit could be used for other local events, or it could travel with the festival, which changes locations each year.

“They may become part of an annual exhibit if we do something around Route 66 or a Route 66 anniversary, or they could be given to the festival alliance,” said Patrick Tuttle, CVB director. “They will be used for some future project. We just don’t know what or when.”

Tuttle said photographs with recognizable aspects of the nostalgic highway, no matter how long ago they were taken, are eligible. “We’re looking for those pieces that are identifiable by landmark or location,” he said.

Images can be created by any form of photography as long as part of the image depicts and captures the history and essence of historic Route 66.

Submissions are to be single matted photographs without frames. They can be 8-by-10 prints matted as 11-by-14s, or 11-by-14 prints matted as 16-by-20s. Color photos must be matted in black. White mats should be used for black-and-white photos.

The exhibit will be displayed July 29 through Aug. 23. The photos will not be returned since they will become a permanent exhibit.

Submissions may be made by professional and amateur photographers. There is no submission fee. Identifying information should be submitted on the back mat and is to include the photographer’s name, phone number, mailing address, title, the year the photograph was taken and the geographical information.

A committee will select the photos to be displayed. The criteria for selection are that the photos are submitted and matted correctly, are properly documented, are a good representation of Route 66 and are artistically presented.

Submissions are due by noon July 15. They may be hand-delivered or mailed to the CVB office in City Hall, 602 S. Main St., Joplin, MO 64801.

The exhibit will be judged during the festival. A Best of Show award will be given. The winner will be announced from the main stage of the festival, and the photograph will be featured in an edition of Route 66 Magazine.

Release forms for any people depicted in the images should be submitted with the entries.
