DUQUESNE, Mo. —
A special election will be held in Duquesne to determine the winner for the 1st Ward council seat.
Incumbent Frank Herron and challenger Barbara Welch each received 54 votes in the April 2 municipal election.
Welch said today that she believes that the outcome should be decided by the voters.
“I just think a revote lets the democratic process flow down and doesn’t take anything away from the voters,” Welch said.
The other option was to decide by some game of chance, such as flipping a coin, which Duquesne officials have done in the past.
Herron said today that the situation has been a learning experience in election law.
“Before this, I wasn’t really sure what happened in an election tie,” he said. “This isn’t an everyday occurrence, so it has been good to learn the process.”
A proclamation will be issued at the Duquesne City Council meeting tonight calling for the special election and determining a date.
