South African consulate brings school supplies on Nelson Mandela’s birthday

JOPLIN, Mo. — The Joplin School District today received a gift of school supplies from the South African Consulate General in Chicago on Nelson Mandela’s 93rd birthday.

Consul Thoke Maleswena traveled in a van to Joplin with others with the consulate to present several boxloads of school supplies. People are encouraged to find ways to improve the world on the birthday of the former president, a national holiday in South Africa.

Maleswena quoted Mandela in explaining how he viewed education.

“Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world,” he said.

Two cakes, one decorated with a photo of Mandela and another decorated with the South African flag, were shared among those with the consulate and school officials.
