JOPLIN, Mo. —
The Ozark Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America will hold its annual School Night to Join Scouting on Thursday. (Sept. 6) Boys in the first through 12th grades are encouraged to sign up that night for scouting at a location nearest them.
All new scouts receive a free ice cream cone courtesy of Anderson’s Ice Cream and Cinnamon Rolls. (Redeemable coupons will be handed out after registration night.)
The annual registration cot is $15 per year and there is an option annual subscription to Boy’s Life magazine available for $12.
Sign-up locations at 6 p.m. are: Carl Junction Christian Church; Marionville Elementary School; Triway Elementary School in Stella; Anderson United Methodist Church; Southwest Elementary, Washburn; Memorial Park, Cassville; and the Scout Building in Granby.
Sign up locations at 6:30 p.m. are: Irving and West Central elementary schools, Joplin; Webster Primary Building, Webb City; Carthage Municipal Roller Rink; Neosho First Christian; Neosho United Methodist Church Church-Christian Life Center; the American Legion Hall in Monett; Purdy Elementary; Noel Elementary; and Jasper Elementary.
Sign up locations at 7 p.m. are: Stapleton, Royal Heights and Emerson elementary schools, Joplin; Duenweg Elementary School; College Heights Christian School, Joplin; and Verona Elementary School.

Wally Kennedy: Ye Olde King Pizza to open by September
Let’s start at the beginning. Earlier this year, Brian and Tracy Myers, of Joplin, signed a licensing agreement to bring a Ye Olde King Pizza to Joplin. This style of pizza was the forerunner for what eventually would become Joplin’s signature pizza restaurant, Pizza by Stout. That restaurant at 2101 S. Range Line Road was destroyed by the May 2011 tornado.

FACES OF RECOVERY: 176,869 volunteers help put Joplin together again
They initially came in droves, pouring into Joplin by the thousands during the months following the May 2011 tornado to clear debris, clean up damaged homes and businesses and distribute donations of food, water, clothing and other necessities.

Hatred, resentment and retribution fueled bloody encounter at Rader’s Farm
Members of the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry regiment had been in Jasper County in large numbers on previous foraging missions. Coming from their outpost in modern-day Baxter Springs, Kan., the armed former slaves in Union uniforms had entered the property and homes of white residents to take their food or other useful supplies.
