Guard company based in Pierce City preparing to deploy

PIERCE CITY, Mo. — Family members, friends and supporters of the Missouri National Guard’s 276th Engineer Company will gather Monday at Pierce City High School for an Afghanistan deployment ceremony.

Gov. Jay Nixon is to speak at the deployment. Also participating will be Maj. Gen. Stephen L. Danner, adjutant general of Missouri.

The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Pierce City High School is located at 300 N. Myrtle St.

The 276th Engineer Company, based in Pierce City, will deploy in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The 154-soldier unit will deploy to Afghanistan to conduct deconstruction operations. International forces in Afghanistan, including those of the United States, are preparing to hand over responsibility for security to Afghan soldiers and police by the end of 2014.

This will be the company’s first deployment. The unit is led by Capt. Phil Kirk and 1st Sgt. Timothy Uptegrove.
