A $60,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri will go toward two more houses to be built by Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity for those displaced by the May 2011 tornado.
Members of the foundation board on Tuesday presented a symbolic check to Scott Clayton, director of Joplin Habitat. The presentation was held at Habitat’s new ReStore at 5201 N. Main St. The store opened Jan. 20, Clayton said.
The grant is from the Joplin Recovery Fund, established by the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri to support mid- and long-term community redevelopment efforts for rebuilding from the tornado. So far, grants of more than $3.8 million have been awarded from the Joplin Recovery Fund to Joplin-area nonprofits.
Clayton said Habitat has built 81 houses since the tornado, with six in progress. He said a goal is to build 10 to 12 additional houses through the rest of the year.
In addition, 27 houses have been repaired through Habitat’s “A Brush with Kindness” program to do minor exterior repairs, in partnership with Hearts and Hammers.
Clayton said the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri provided a $150,000 matching grant for the ReStore building, with Habitat raising more than $300,000 for building acquisition and rehabilitation. The building includes 10,000 square feet of office space and 50,000 square feet of store space.
Altogether, the foundation has provided Habitat with $343,000 for various projects since the tornado.
“They’ve been absolutely phenomenal,” Clayton said of the foundation.
Stephanie Howard, board chairwoman of the foundation, said Joplin Habitat is a great use of money donated for tornado recovery.
“We believe Habitat for Humanity has done a great job in helping Joplin to recover,” Howard said.
SCOTT CLAYTON, director of Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity, said the ReStore offers home furnishings, tools, tubs and showers, lighting, kitchen and bath fixtures, cabinets and vanities, and many other things needed for home projects. Donations are welcome. The store is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
