NEOSHO, Mo. —
Gib Garrow has some advice for those planning to come to Neosho’s Citywide Garage Sale on Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6.
“They need to bring two pickups and be patient,” said Garrow, economic development director for the Neosho Area Chamber of Commerce. The chamber is sponsoring the event, as it has for the past 25 years.
A one-day event for the past 24 years, Garrow said the decision was made to expand to two days for the 25th anniversary.
“We’ve had a lot of calls,” Garrow said. “It could be really wild.”
Early estimates are for more than 350 garage sales around town, including many multi-family sales. The chamber is estimating about 8,000 shoppers in town for the two-day event. The chamber is promoting it as “Missouri’s largest garage sale.”
Garrow said schools won’t be in session on Friday, so there won’t be any school traffic.
The chamber has advertised in the garage sale sections of newspapers in locations including Kansas City, Mo.; Van Buren and Fort Smith, Ark.; and Stillwater, Okla.
The two-day event will be a boost to the town’s economy, Garrow said. He said many out-of-town visitors will arrive Thursday and fill up the hotels. On Friday and Saturday, they will eat in Neosho’s restaurants.
“It’s the biggest day of the year for the restaurants,” Garrow said of previous years. “We think whatever business they’ve done in the past will be doubled.”
Garrow said the city’s police, street and public works departments will be on duty for the two-day event, helping to keep traffic moving smoothly. He said most shoppers park in a neighborhood and walk from sale to sale.
The sales begin at 7 a.m. each day. The addresses for those who have registered their sales will be on the Neosho Area Chamber of Commerce website, neoshocc.com on Thursday. People may also visit the site to register their sales.
Maps of sale locations will be available at local convenience stores and restaurants beginning at 5 a.m. on Friday.
