JOPLIN, Mo. —
JobFest 2013, the area’s largest job fair, will take place from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the Holiday Inn Convention Center, 3615 S. Range Line Road.
Admission is free.
“Last year was our first year, and we had more than 1,200 people who signed in,” said Leslie Abram, event coordinator with the Workforce Investment Board of Southwest Missouri. “We’re expecting at least that many this year.”
This year’s fair will feature 52 employers and exhibitors.
The fair, Abram said, attracts people who are looking for a job or who are planning to change jobs.
“We are seeing improvement in local business where they need to hire more people,” she said. “We’ll have an outstanding base of manufacturers represented, along with employers in hospitality and customer service.”
Among the manufacturers are Able Manufacturing, Modine, RockTenn and La-Z-Boy.
Organizers said job seekers are encouraged to arrive dressed to impress and to be prepared to explain their skills to a potential employer. The employers at JobFest are the actual decision-makers who can help people get their foot in the door.
Those attending also should provide copies of their resumes as well as their scores for the National Career Readiness Certificate if they have been tested for that certification.

Hiring surge?
THE NUMBER OF AMERICANS seeking unemployment benefits fell last week to 330,000, the lowest level in five years, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Analysts say the trend is evidence that employers are cutting fewer jobs and may step up hiring.

Police believe Doyle Handle shot himself after fatally shooting Dena Davenport during a domestic disturbance Thursday night at their residence in Grove. Officers responded to a 6:55 p.m. report of a shooting at the couple’s home on Wood Street on the southwest side of Grove and found Handle, 52, in the front yard with a gunshot wound to his jaw.
