JOPLIN, Mo. —
Despite a tornado and an economic downturn, the Joplin area made gains in attracting new jobs and businesses over the last two years, officials of the Joplin Regional Prosperity Initiative were told Wednesday.
Leaders in the group outlined returns on recent efforts and plans for future programs during a breakfast meeting held at the Continental Banquet Center.
The goal of the initiative is to work with organizations in the region to market the Joplin area and surrounding counties and to develop a stronger workforce, attract new business and support the expansion of existing businesses.
Communities represented by the initiative have added 1,859 jobs over the past three years, according to Rob O’Brian, president of the Joplin Chamber of Commerce.

Farmers Insurance teams up with Rebuild Joplin
Farmers Insurance announced Tuesday that the company will team up with Rebuild Joplin for an initiative to help the community complete its recovery efforts. The company already has placed one of its executives in Joplin, and it is pledging additional funds and volunteer hours by company workers to go toward the city’s recovery.

Alan Marble, who will retire as president of Crowder College in June, has been hired as special assistant to the president of Missouri Southern State University. “With his long experience in higher education administration and his intricate knowledge of the needs of students, we knew Dr. Marble would be a great fit at MSSU,” President Bruce Speck said in a statement that announced the transition.
