NEOSHO, Mo. —
A distracted driving event at Crowder College on Wednesday featured video simulators that required student participants to answer texts while negotiating through traffic.
Student Klayten Holt, 18, of Cassville lasted about a minute on the simulator before striking a motorcycle and a fire truck.
“The brakes don’t work like they should,” he said.
Holt and some other students said despite the simulation, they would continue to text and drive. Another said the simulation made a difference and he would quit. Another student, the daughter of an insurance agent, said she has never used her cell phone while driving.
Mark Aubuchon, Crowder’s campus life coordinator, said the college has brought the simulators to campus for the past few years. He said texting and driving and talking on a mobile phone while driving are more common problems than drinking while driving.
“It’s something all of us have done from time to time,” Aubuchon said. “We’re really putting ourselves and others at risk.”
Aubuchon said he hopes the simulations provide students with an experience and gives them information that may someday save lives.
