A petition to oppose the sale of a downtown church to a homeless ministry gained about 130 signatures in four days, according to organizers.

Jon Koucky, a downtown resident who said he opposes a potential sale of First Baptist Church to City of Refuge, said approximately 132 signatures were delivered to the church’s pastor, Robert Morgan.

The church, located at 633 S. Pearl Ave., is scheduled to vote on a motion to sell their building for $600,000 to Dan Anderson, the pastor and founder of City of Refuge, during a meeting tomorrow night.

Koucky and other residents and downtown business owners said they oppose the sale because an influx of homeless could create safety concerns downtown and thwart efforts at economic redevelopment.
