BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has assessed a $500 civil penalty against the KFC/Taco Bell at 1920 Military Ave. for a violation of the state food code.
The fine is based on state inspections of the restaurant on Jan. 10 and Feb. 13. The civil penalty was assessed for one violation found during the inspections — failure to control the presence of pests.
The inspection reports list several other findings, including:
n Employees prepared tacos with bare hands on Jan. 10.
n Rodent droppings were found in a cabinet next to the drive-through window on Jan. 10 and Feb. 13.
n Young cockroaches were observed next to an electrical box in a cabinet on Jan. 10.
n Restroom fixtures, toilets and sinks were grossly soiled on Jan. 10.
n Microwave ovens were severely soiled on Feb. 13.
n Cooked chicken was being held at 121 degrees rather than the required 140 degrees on Feb. 13.
Restaurant manager Joseph Hutchison on Friday said he couldn’t comment on the KDHE action, referring questions to the home office.
The KDHE documents list Table Rock Restaurants, of Wentzville, Mo., as the owner of the restaurant. The resident agent of the limited liability corporation is listed as CT Corporation System, of Clayton, Kan.
No phone number could be found for Table Rock Restaurants. A message left at CT Corporation System was not returned.
