Five people were killed and a child was injured in a two-vehicle accident at 10:15 a.m. Thursday on Highway 169, a little more than a mile north of Highway 160 in Labette County, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
One of the drivers, Henry A. White, 44, of Cherryvale, Kan., was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, Joseph C. Blackburn, 75, of Parsons, Kan., was taken to Mercy Hospital in Independence, where he died.
Two occupants of Blackburn’s car, Misty D. Bentsen, 31, of Plattsburg, and Clara M. Blackburn, 77, of Parsons, and one occupant of White’s car, Terri G. White, 48, of Cherryvale, died at the scene. A second occupant of White’s car, Noah Stoddard, 5, of Cherryvale, was taken to St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa, Okla., with injuries, the patrol said.
Blackburn’s southbound car hydroplaned on wet pavement, crossed the center line and struck White’s car head-on.
n A Buffalo, Mo., resident was injured in a two-vehicle accident at 3:55 p.m. Thursday on Missouri Highway 86, three miles west of Golden in Barry County, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.
Lawrence V. Williams, 19, was taken to Eureka Springs Hospital in Eureka Springs, Ark., the patrol said.
Williams was driving an eastbound car that was struck in the rear by an eastbound car driven by Michael S. Farmer, 24, of Huntsville, Ark., when Williams stopped suddenly, the patrol said.
