A Jasper County judge on Wednesday ordered a 34-year-old man to stand trial on a felony assault charge related to the beating of another man in July behind the Veterans of Foreign Wars building just north of Joplin.

Associate Circuit Judge Richard Copeland found probable cause for John D. Carroll, 200 E. Zora St., to be bound over for trial on a charge of first-degree assault after a preliminary hearing in Jasper County Circuit Court. The judge set Oct. 10 as the date for the defendant’s first appearance in a trial division of the court.

Carroll is accused of being one of several people who attacked Eric T. Bicknell in the early morning hours of July 12 behind the VFW post off North Main Street Road. Bicknell suffered a broken jaw and internal injuries. A female witness testified Wednesday that she saw Carroll among a group of five or six people who were hitting Bicknell.
