A 21-year-old Joplin man who reportedly was caught in possession of a stolen motorcycle has been charged with felony tampering.

Cpl. Chuck Niess of the Joplin Police Department said officers checked out a report Saturday night of two men pushing a motorcycle down the street near Third Street and Oak Avenue. The Honda motorcycle turned out to have been stolen from Christopher D. Patton, 24, 2131 S. Adele Ave.

Niess said James A. Quallate, 2328 S. Willard Ave., told police that he found the motorcycle by the side of the road. But he was arrested after further investigation and was charged with first-degree tampering. The other man was released without charges, Niess said.

Another Joplin man was arrested Tuesday at his home in connection with a missing rental car from Avis Rentals at the Joplin Regional Airport. Niess said Hugh E. Landsperger, 40, 2501 E. Eighth St., reportedly rented a 2008 Mazda and failed to return the vehicle when it was due back on Sept. 26.

Niess said officers found the car Tuesday at the man’s home. Landsperger was charged with felony failure to return rental property.
