Voter turnout is strong so far at one Neosho precinct, as is support for Sen. John McCain in the presidential race and for Rep. Kenny Hulshof for the Missouri’s gubernatorial race.
Interviews with 13 voters outside polling places at The Civic, formerly the Neosho Municipal Auditorium, showed 11 supported the Republican ticket for president, while two supported Sen. Barack Obama and running-mate Sen. Joe Biden. Of the 10 voters who indicated how they voted for Missouri governor, nine said they voted for Hulshof, while one said she voted for Democrat Jay Nixon.
Among the McCain supporters was Mike Bentz, of Neosho, who works in concrete and construction.
“I don’t like Obama’s views,” Bentz said. “I think it is going to be more spending, spending, spending.”
Bentz said he feared Obama would lead to bigger government, while Bentz said he believes in less government.
Julie Shockley, of Neosho, said she voted for Obama because of his opposition to the war in Iraq and for his tax plans for the middle class.
“I feel he will help the middle class more,” she said.
Traffic was steady at The Civic polling station. A total of 373 ballots had been cast by 11:15 a.m. No problems had been reported.
