A fire Tuesday night at a duplex apartment on South Connecticut Avenue was being treated by Joplin firefighters and police as a case of arson.

Firefighters were called at 11:27 p.m. to 1912 S. Connecticut Ave. for a fire in a bedroom at the back of an apartment occupied by Meghan M. Robeson and Elizabeth McFarland. The fire was confined to the bedroom and was extinguished, according to Keith Stammer, public information officer for the Joplin Fire Department.

Stammer said no injuries were reported. Robeson told firefighters and police that she was home alone reading when she heard a noise in the back bedroom and fled the apartment. Firefighters found a fire burning just inside a bedroom window. Stammer said arson was suspected, and the incident remained under investigation by the city fire marshal and police.
