MOUNT VERNON, Mo. — The mother of a 9-year-old boy who was killed in a house fire Friday remains in serious condition at the burn unit of a Springfield hospital, according to a release from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.

Serena Real, 33, was seriously injured in the fire that took the life of her son, Kolton Real. Lawrence County Sheriff Brad DeLay said Serena Real was pulled from the house by bystanders who initially called in the fire.

DeLay said the woman and her son had been sleeping and apparently were not awakened by the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. DeLay said investigators have uncovered no evidence of arson, foul play, or drug or alcohol use.

DeLay said he expects the Missouri Division of Fire Safety to issue a report on the fire by Friday.
