The Joplin Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Route 66 Mother Road Marathon Committee today announced the inaugural Route 66 Mother Road Marathon set for Oct. 3.
Showcasing the world-famous amous Route 66, the marathon begins in Miami, Okla., following Route 66 through Kansas on into Missouri, ending at Joplin Memorial Hall on Seventh Street in downtown Joplin, according to Vince Lindstrom, Joplin CVB director.
The Route 66 Mother Road Marathon is Tri-State event with active participation from the City of Miami, Oklahoma and the Miami Chamber of Commerce and CVB. The marathon will continue from Miami through Quapaw and Commerce Oklahoma and then across Kansas through Baxter Springs and Galena. With the Route 66 theme the plans are for special events throughout the week of the marathon.
The Joplin CVB has also announced a half marathon to be held during Boomtown Days in June. That event, said Lindstrom, will be held as a training event for the Mother Road Marathon.
The Committee is expecting to attract over 1,000 participants for this first event. More details are availabe at www.visitjoplinmo.com.
