LAMAR, Mo. - An early morning fire destroyed St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lamar today. No one was injured in the blaze that firefighters said was reported to them before 6:45 a.m. at the brick church at 200 E. 17th St.
The building is considered a total loss following a roof collapse.
"We're sick. That's our home," said Maria O'Sullivan as she watched firefighters pour water on the smoking remains of the church where she has been a member since 1966.
Tom O'Sullivan, a member of the parish council, said they have not received any word on the cause of the fire.
"We just carry on," he added, when asked about plans to rebuild.
No information on the cause of the fire has been released yet.
The cornerstone for the church was laid in 1904.
