The Jasper County sheriff’s deputies today located and arrested a second suspect who fled a drug bust by narcotics agents Monday in which a pound of methamphetamine was seized.
A 29-year-old man from Springfield was arrested after he was found hiding between some hay bales in a farm field, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department said. A farmer contacted the Sheriff’s Department when his dogs alerted him to the man’s presence in the field.
The suspect was the driver of a pickup truck that members of the Jasper County Drug Task Force observed arriving in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Carthage for a suspected drug deal about 9:30 p.m. Monday. The truck was stopped by deputies and state troopers at Airport Drive and County Road 120 after leaving the lot without its occupants ever exiting the vehicle or making contact with anyone.
Both occupants tried to flee on foot, the Sheriff’s Department said. The passenger, Francis Gomez-Ortega, 25, of Springfield, was caught and charged with second-degree trafficking in drugs based on a pound of meth allegedly found inside the truck. But the driver managed to escape.
The Sheriff’s Department said he was caught sleeping this morning in a field about three to four miles from the scene of the traffic stop.
