MOUNT VERNON, Mo. — Lawrence County voters will decide a number of city council and school board races on Tuesday.
At Stotts City, voters will be asked whether they want the town to have a police chief. The town, which has a population of about 250, has not had a police chief in a long time, said a bartender at Donna’s Stotts City Bar.
Mayor Joel Margolis said the voters will be asked if they want the town’s Board of Aldermen to appoint a chief of police.
“The police chief would be hired by the board if voters approve the measure,” he said.
Aurora
Four people are vying for two seats with three-year terms on the Aurora R-8 Board of Education. They are Michele Parbury, Steve Bryan, Matt Lauffer and Roger Dummit, an incumbent.
Four people are seeking two seats with three-year terms on the Aurora City Council. They are Eddie Breeding, Jerry Lee West, Doyle Ferguson and Mike Bloss, an incumbent.
Two people are vying for one seat with a one-year term on the council. They are David A. Price and W.E. “Gene” Anderson, an incumbent.
Voters in the Aurora Special Road District will decide whether to retain a 17-cent levy for road purposes.
Miller
Three people are vying for two seats with three-year terms on the Miller R-2 Board of Education. They are Cindy Gulick, an incumbent, and Jeff Hadlock and Todd J. Cook.
Three people are seeking the post of mayor. They are Garry Baker, Dennis Harris and Steven D. Epps.
Four people are seeking two at-large seats on the Miller Board of Aldermen. They are Bill Jones and Kerry Johnson, the incumbents, and Bill Wilhite and Milo Daniel.
Mount Vernon
Three people are candidates for two seats with three-year terms on the Mount Vernon R-5 Board of Education. The candidates are John Rutledge, Paul T. Morris and Katherine Teel.
Two people are seeking the post of 1st Ward alderman. They are James Greene, the incumbent, and Chet W. Hunter.
Three people are seeking the post of 2nd Ward alderman. They are Gary W. Albers, Linda Day and David Van Pelt, the incumbent.
Three people are seeking the seat of 4th Ward alderman. They are John Hull, James W. Schmitt and Charles R. McConnell.
Pierce City
Five people are vying for two seats with three-year terms on the Pierce City R-6 Board of Education. They are Kevin Hatfield, Mike Zebert, Hollis Webb, and incumbents Kenny O’Hara and Fred Slagle.
Voters in the Pierce Benefit Special Road District will be asked whether they want to retain a 19-cent levy for road purposes for four years.
Other road districts
Voters in the Green Benefit Special Road District will choose from among four candidates to fill one seat on the district’s board. The candidates are Rodney Riley, Robert N. Calvin, Shawn Duncan and Cloyce D. Hendrix. District voters also will be asked whether they want to retain a 22-cent levy for road purposes for four years.
Voters in the Vineyard Benefit Special Road District will be asked whether they want to retain a 22-cent levy for four years.
Voters in the Mount Pleasant Benefit Special Road District will choose from among two candidates to fill one seat on the district’s board. The candidates are Don Kleiboeker and Roger Moennig.
Unopposed candidates
The following candidates are unopposed and virtually assured of election.
Freistatt — Trustees: Brian Paynter and Eva F. Jobe.
Mount Vernon — Board of Education: John Rutledge and Katherine Teel; Board of Aldermen, 3rd Ward, Max Springer.
Pierce City — Board of Aldermen: 2nd Ward, Allen Stockton; 3rd Ward, Julie Garner; 4th Ward, Cory Sooter.
Stotts City — Collector: Cheryl Reynolds; Board of Aldermen: North Ward, Rodney White; South Ward, Vicky Stearns.
Verona — Mayor: Roy Snyder; Board of Aldermen: at-large posts, Matt Pruente and Deborah L. Snyder.
Poll hours
Polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
