PITTSBURG, Kan. — Viola Hutcherson, a Pittsburg State University graduate who received two degrees in mathematics in the 1940s, has left her entire estate to PSU.

Hutcherson died in April 2008 at age 93. She taught math for 40 years and retired from Kansas City public schools.

The gift recently was presented to the university. It will be available to students starting in the fall 2010 semester. The $285,000 gift will be used for math scholarships.

Hutcherson had been a regular donor of small gifts to PSU over the years. She was an honorary life member of the Kansas National Education Association, a member of the PSU Half-Century Club, vice president and program chairwoman of the Kansas Retired Teachers Association, and a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society in Kansas City, Kan.
