Joplin police conducted an alcohol sting last week at 17 local retailers, citing four businesses for selling to a minor.

Police said in a news release Tuesday that 13 of the businesses refused to sell alcohol to the 19-year-old. But clerks at four of the retailers did make sales even though the teen was using age-valid identification. Those clerks were cited, and reports were forwarded to the Missouri Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control for possible administrative sanctions against the license holders, police said.

The businesses and clerks were not identified in Tuesday’s release. The operation was conducted by the Police Department’s special enforcement unit and financed by a Missouri Department of Public Safety grant.
